Winter Park, Florida has become one of 25 cities in the state to prohibit smoking and e-cigarette use in parks, beaches and recreational facilities. However, some forms of smoking remain allowed.
According to reports, the ban passed at a November 8 city commission meeting per Florida Statute 386.209. It applies specifically to city-owned or operated outdoor parks and rec sites.
Parks & Rec Director Jason Seeley said the ban aims to protect areas where children play and people engage in outdoor activities. Smokers who disregard warnings may face charges.
The ban takes effect after a second reading expected at the December 13 commission meeting. Winter Park joins other Florida municipalities regulating vaping and smoking in public recreation spaces.
